How can we reconcile these words with the promise that "the righteous will inherit the earth" when it is said that "heaven and earth are preserved for fire"? Will God destroy the Earth with fire? No. If these verses were to mean that "the earth" is to be burned, then "heaven," or the sun, stars and other heavenly bodies, would also somehow have to be destroyed by fire. And it would be a little difficult to burn the Sun... So the word "earth" used in Peter's Letter should be understood differently.
